Whether you’re in between jobs, working on a project that requires specialized skills and expertise or are interested in a new career path, freelance work can provide the opportunity to test drive different work models to determine what’s right for you. According to a recent study from MBO Partners, 41.1 million Americans identify as freelancers, from those who work just a few hours a month to full-time independent contractors or W2 workers.
This flexibility allows people to choose when they want to work, where they want to work, and with whom they want to work. But it’s important to remember that not everyone needs or wants this level of control over their work, and the labor market should accommodate this diversity.
The most common motivation for pursuing online freelance work is increased flexibility, followed by higher income and better learning opportunities. In addition, the flexibility provided by online freelancing can help people better balance their work and home lives. However, these findings also highlight some challenges and gaps in people’s experience of flexibility in this form of work.
Online freelancers are highly motivated by flexibility but have some expectations that differ from their actual experiences. Specifically, the research suggests that freelancers value job flexibility even as they experience decreased worker-controlled flexibility during the pandemic. Moreover, occupation mediates the way in which people experience and perceive flexibility and gender differences impact the outcomes of this form of work.
Freelancing can be a great way to build up a strong portfolio of skills that can make you more valuable as an employee. By focusing on a specific industry or skill area, you can develop an expertise that will allow you to stand out in the job market and charge more for your services. This can lead to longer term client relationships, which in turn can result in consistent and reliable revenue for your business.
But it’s not all rosy, and one of the key challenges to freelance work is managing a fluctuating workload. It’s not uncommon for freelancers to have periods of lull in the work they’re doing, and this can be due to a number of reasons, from holiday seasons or slowdowns in the economy that reduce consumer spending. It’s important to plan ahead when you’re a freelancer and think about how you’ll manage these peaks and valleys.
Another challenge for freelancers is managing their rates. While it’s important to be competitive and find ways to differentiate your services, it’s also important not to price yourself out of the market. You may end up losing clients who aren’t willing to pay your rate or who aren’t able to afford your services at all. This can be a frustrating experience, but it’s something you’ll need to learn how to navigate as you continue to grow your freelance business.
